As part of Google's algorithim in calculating Search
Engine Optimization ranks, one important step they
use is known as Page Rank (PR). PR can be thought of
as a voting system. Your website will recieve "votes"
through links pointing to your site.
Something important to know is every "vote"
is not counted the same. Download
Google's Toolbar and there is a little bar with
the words PageRank written above it. If you hover you're
mouse over the image, it will display a number and the
higher then the number, the higher the Page Rank. The
number's go from 0-10 with most sites having around
a 3-4. Once after 4, the amount of vote's it takes to
increase a number gets extremely large.

The trick is to get companies with very
high Page Ranks to give a link to your site, so you
will get many votes to your site. Internal Page's
also give Page Rank to your Pages, so it is good practice
to keep an archived list of your work, so you will
have the extra votes.
Google added another aspect to Page
Rank, something I call Page Rank Leakage. Everytime
you link to an external vote, you are giving votes
to that other site. The way the voting system works
is this. Google gives you a certain number of votes
depending on your PR. Google take's the number of
links on each page, and divides that number of votes
by the number of links. If you have a internal links,
you are supporting yourself by giving yourself links,
but the more external links you have, the less vote's
you will give yourself. This is why companies have
started to make page's just dedicated to external
links, so the votes will mainly stay internal.
When asking for links from a company,
you should ask for it a content page, not in a links
page, because you will get a better vote from a content
page vs a page with tons of links. Also, make sure
you are consistent with where links point to, http://www.gordonwebdesign.com
will show up differently in Page Rank as http://gordonwebdesign.com,
so to be safe, one should always use the www
in front.
